The Loyalty Pledge

Didn't we all mumble the lines at assembly whenever Mrs. so and so in her shrill voice called out, 'The loyalty pledge...':

"I pledge my loyalty to the President and Nation of Kenya
My readiness and duty to defend the flag of our Republic
My life, strength and service in the task of nation building
In the living spirit embodied in our National motto 'Harambee'
and perpetuated in the Nyayo philosophy of Peace, Love and Unity."

I thought that this stuff had been scrapped by now, for obvious reasons, but it turns out that the 'loyalty pledge' is alive and well in Primary Schools to this day.

  1. It should be scrapped but again who will scrap it if 'em politicians view it's significance n no one among them notices that it's no longer Moi's Era coz to 'em all eras are the same. Damn!

  2. napinga
if we scrap it out it wud mean that we are not loyal to our country and that would make independence meaningless
    just think about it!
some of us are just lucky to be born in independent kenya and its unfair for us to disown our very own independence

please let us be loyal to our motherland, i love u all and i love kenya

  3. I feel you James. It's just 'to the President' bit and the 'Nyayoism' therein. Perhaps an edited version...

    We love Kenya, no doubt!

  4. Why scrap it? Have you thought of the words, or are asking for its scraping coz it reminds you Nyayosim. We should embrase these words. I ask, what is our rallying call. Mutua tried with "Najivunia" and what did we do? We shot it down. We are a people without any idea of what patriotism is about.

  12. Guys, NYAYO doesn't mean Moi, It was said by the former president to mean that we follow the footprints of what brought us together as a nation by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and that is LOVE, PEACE and UNITY. Look at us now as we continue deviating from the the Nyayo philosophy of PEACE,LOVE and UNITY we've ended up fighting and looking at each other based on our ethnicity and creating enormous hatred between ourselves. I still believe that if we love our people as a nation we will strive to be a peaceful country once again.

  13. Before thinking like that. have a look at other' countries' loyalty pledges. for instance India's says "India is my country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters. I love my country and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage. I shall always strive to be worth of it. I shall give my parents, teachers and all elders respect and treat everyone with courtesy. To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion. In their well-being and prosperity, alone lies my happiness.

No, Hapana, hakuna kitu kama hiyo. At least we should hold to some words that define ourselves as Kenyans.

  17. Lets live by the words n not personalities. If we live by the Nyayo Philosophy of Peace,Love n Unity, Kenya will be a better place for us n our future generations!

  18. our loyalty pledge is still alive and binding .in fact being loyal to the President is not worshiping an individual, but respect to the presidency as an institution, which is a symbol of national unity.what else do we need beyond PEACE,LOVE &UNITY ANY WAY?

  20. I had no idea that the pledge was still said in skuls. if i were to choose a pledge for kenya ad take 'Daima Kenya' by Eric Wainaina. words don't get stronger and more meaningful than that. infact in these months leading to the elections that song should be played everyde b4 the 7 o'clock news and 'Kenya Only' b4 the 9 o'clock news. to remind kenyans wea we've come from(and shouln't go back) and wea we should be headed.

  21. Find out how Americans achieve their partriotism. We need a uniting slogan at an early age, that will instill in us than oneness as a nation, the loyalty pledge helped, could someone out there modify it to suit what we Kenyans want Kenya to be so that we grow up and die for it?
